Episode 13: Daisy's Approval

“Daisy! I, uh… I was just about to go upstairs. I think we should go now.” Lily uttered nervously with a fake laugh at the end. She pushed Daisy inside but the girl resisted and stood staring towards Alex at the doorstep.

“OH MY GOD! That’s… that’s…”

“That’s nobody important, Daisy. I think we should go. Mother is gonna be worried, you know.”

Daisy, however, didn’t budge. Alex was starting to become uneasy with this strange girl scanning him inside out like that. She then looked towards Lily with sparkly eyes and burst out into hysterics.

“Lily!! That’s the son of the Beddington family. It’s the Alex Carl Beddington!!”

Lily felt like kicking herself. She knew Daisy would make a fuss out of this guy. And to know that her bigger sister knew this guy all along but never told her, Daisy won’t be letting her go after this.

“Hey Lily, who’s that girl? Is that your sister?” Alex asked. Now she felt like kicking Alex instead. She glanced towards Daisy’s face and saw that I-don’t-believe-this look she always wears whenever they share juicy gossips together.

“You know him?! Why do I not know anything about this yet?”

“I don’t know him, Daisy. We just met in a little accident, that’s all!

“But he knows your name!”

“Of course I know her name, she’s my girlfriend. So you’re the sister she was talking about. Hello, my name’s Alex Carl Beddington.” Before Lily could say anything, Alex interrupted and introduced himself to Daisy. He even handed out his right hands to shake with hers. Lily couldn’t believe her eyes. There must be something that this moron was planning to do. And he even admitted that she was her girlfriend again!

Daisy took Alex’s hand with great amazement in her face. “I… I’m Daisy.” She said.

“Nice to meet you, Daisy. I can’t wait to get to know you better this evening.”

Okay, so that was it! Lily furiously took her sister’s hand from Alex’s. “Oh no you don’t! You’re not coming with us to the concert this evening and that’s final!!” she snapped. Daisy was surprised to see her sister so angry. It had been quite a while since she actually exploded towards something or someone.

“Lily, what’s wrong with you? Why can’t he come? And you owe me a lot for not telling me about him!”

“He is NOT my boyfriend! He’s just a spoilt and snobbish brat!”

“He’s Alex Carl Beddington, for crying out loud! What’s gone into you?!”

“Lily, your sister’s got a point there. Why are you so angry anyway? I just came to apologize.”

“Urghhh, FINE! Fine! But this doesn’t mean anything. The concert’s 8 o’clock.” Lily gave up. She totally couldn’t win with her sister siding with the moron. She knew this would happen all along, which was why she didn’t want to tell Daisy all about him in the first place.

Alex smiled happily, satisfied that he finally won. “I’ll pick you up at 7 o’clock then. We can get a better spot if we come early.”

Lily simply huffed as an answer and walked into the open door of the building, pulling Daisy with her as she went. Alex stood by the doorstep for a moment, still grinning contently with his victory. After a while, he turned and returned to the Bentley, humming a happy tune on the way. His loyal man opened the back-seat door for him and closed it as he safely entered and seated himself comfortably. The man then entered the driver’s door and then they were off.

The clock stroke 6.30 o’clock and Lily wasn’t looking very happy. Daisy on the other hand was busy looking for clothes for herself and especially Lily. “You should look your best, you know. You’re not dating just a regular guy; it’s the son of the Beddington family!”

“He is NOT my boyfriend, Daisy!” Lily kept stating again and again. But one thing about Daisy that she clearly inherited from her beloved sister was her stubbornness. And despite her sister’s evil glare and serious tone, Daisy went on with clothes-hunting for her sister’s dress for the concert. Daisy seemed excited of seeing Alex and shaking hands with him. Though she had felt quite disappointed because her chance of marrying the son of the Beddington family was shattered by her own sister, but she was more delighted with the fact that her sister finally has a steady boyfriend. Albeit her sister denied that she had nothing to do with him.

“Here, I think you’d look dazzling in this!” Daisy held up a light-blue summer dress towards her sister that was bought at a jumble sale two years ago. Lily thought it looked too cheesy for a concert.

“I’m not wearing this. I’m sticking with my t-shirt and jeans.”

“You and your jeans! You’d look out of place walking beside him in that.” Lily rebutted. Lily stood up from sitting on her bedside and walked towards the window, ignoring the babbling Daisy behind her. It was a very calm street down there. But in half an hour, the moron would be contaminating it with his evil aura. Lily scowled.

7 o’clock finally came. Time seemed to tick faster than it usually does on other days. A yellow sports car stopped in front of the building. Lily immediately recognized it as Alex’s car that had driven her to the mall the other day. She ascended the stairs with Daisy, feeling very reluctant but surprisingly nervous at the same time. She had never felt this nervous before. Even with Daisy chatting happily beside her, she didn’t feel much secure. It felt as if she was falling into a bottomless pit. She didn’t know what was down there. Probably, she thought, the waiting had made her nervous. She blamed Alex for deciding to tag along by the last minute.

There he was, standing proudly beside his bright yellow chariot wearing a black T-shirt and a dark brown jacket outside. He gave them both a formal yet elegant smile. Lily scowled in his face, however. She still thought it looked hideous.

“Good evening, ladies. You two look beautiful tonight.” He said. Daisy’s face brightened to those words, but Lily saw behind that deceiving mask a cold-blooded pretence. The real agenda was yet to come, Lily presumed. She shuddered with her own thoughts.

Alex opened the door for them both. Lily noticed that the windows of the car were heavily tinted. It was broad daylight the day he drove her to the mall. Now that it was dark, she could barely see to the outside of the car. Lily wondered if people on the pavement would be able to look inside.

“Oh gosh, I’ve never been inside an expensive car before!”

Daisy’s words snapped Lily back into reality. Alex was already starting the car. A few minutes later, they were already on the road on the way to the concert at the City Park.
